ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - St. Joseph County needs some serious road repairs, which is why the county’s board of commissioners passed a new way to keep an eye on the roads with the help of AI technology. Watch the story here.
On Tuesday, the board voted to go through with a project in partnership with a group called CYVL. This project will use scanners in place of people, to get PASER (Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating) data.
PASER data is a scale used to measure the quality of the roads, with 1 being the lowest quality roads equal to gravel and 10 being freshly paved roads.
The weighted average for the roads in St. Joseph County is 3.6, which puts them in the poor-quality range.
“In the past, we’ve gotten that manually, and we would drive a section of road, usually a mile section of road and make an assessment based off criteria that is provided and based off our assessment of that mile of road. What this will do is give us that data every 15 feet,” says St. Joseph County Engineer Sky Medors.
The technology will collect data on potholes and cracks in the road, allowing the county to do more roadwork with the same amount of money.
“It will also pick up signs, road signs and tell us the condition,” Medors says. “It will also pick up striping and tell us what kind of striping and the color and condition and so forth. it takes the objectivity out of doing the PASERs.”
This CYVL project is different from other AI road assessments because it uses a 3D component, which allows the county to collect data on chip seal repairs that have piled up, especially on the south side of the county, creating uneven pavement.
“What that does is that creates a cross slope that feels like you’re driving on a slant more or less, and those are things this program will point out to us,” Medors says. “This will help us point out, ‘Hey, we can’t be patching this road anymore.’”
Now that the project is approved, the first step is to get that scanner, which Medors is hoping the county will get within the next two to three weeks.
He says he’s hoping to get those scanners out on the road to do that data collection before the first freeze really hits the roads, and then this one-year program can really take off.
